The hazel dormouse is afforded special protection by law. It is an offence under the 1981 Wildlife and Countryside Act to ill treat any animal, to kill injure or sell or take any protected species, such as the hazel dormouse, or to intentionally damage or destroy or obstruct its places of shelter. Hazel dormice are afforded additional protection and their discovery must be reported to English Nature.
