Bat surveyBat survey and species survey work is undertaken to comply with the Wildlife and Countryside Act(1981) which lists various mammal species and their levels of protection. All bats are fully protected under Schedule 5 of this act, as are; otter, pine marten, wildcat, red squirrel and dormouse. It is illegal to disturb the nests or roosts of these mammals, as it is to catch, kill,or possess any of these mammals; water voles have recently been added to this list of protected species. Similarly, it is illegal to take these species by any means, including by hand, disturbance whilst in the den, damage, destruction or obstruction of the entrance to the den is also illegal. Partial protection is afforded to; badger, edible dormouse, hedgehog, polecats and all shrews. These animals may not be captured except under a license. The badger has additional protection that protects its setts from disturbance, as if it were a Schedule 5 species. Non- native species; it is illegal to release these species into the countryside; muntjac, mink, grey squirrel, edible dormouse, gerbil, black rat. Species surveys are used to determine the location of these species and likely populations. Licenses are required to capture protected species or to disturb them.
